What to do if there are no two of us
What to do if there are only two of us
„The cold wind blows. What to do if there are no two of us?
Sitting under the stars“
From Berlin to Bangkok, billions of young people around the world are wading through the anonymity of big cities guided by the promise of urban modernity.
The desire to succeed in the Thai megacity of Bangkok is an intoxicating weight to carry. Despite the difficulties posed by everyday life - the political situation, media portrayals of what success looks like, familial expectations, and the pressures of tradition - the fantasy of earning happiness remains. Many young adults develop strategies to relieve this pressure, primarily through social contact, creating warmth and protecting themselves from loneliness.
As an observer in Bangkok, I have noticed the differences and similarities between the lives of my friends there, and my life in Berlin. I’m especially fascinated by our shared worries, our fears, and our dreams which determine the direction our lives. This connection to Bangkok has changed my perspective of the city. Now, the everyday moments Bangkok provides have become an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me.
I followed my friends, capturing the ways they would try to fulfil their dreams and desires while fighting feelings of loneliness. The pictures show sensitive and often melancholy observations of everyday life in a megacity. This book is a declaration of my love for Bangkok, and for my friends who have, for years, shared with me all my worries and dreams, despite the great distance between us.
